The term "blood moon" is derived from the 2013 book by televangelist John Hagee, "Four Blood Moons: Something Is About To Change".

During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon goes into the shadow of the Earth. It is no longer illuminated by the direct rays of the Sun, but the Moon doesn't get dark. The Earth's atmosphere refracts or "bends" the Sun's light around the curve of the Earth, and the red rays of the Sun are refracted more than the blue rays, so the red light of sunrise and sunset goes out into the cone of shadow - and the Moon, passing through the cone of shadow, becomes reddish. The exact color depends on how much dust is in the stratosphere; when the air is dusty, the Moon becomes quite red, but when the air is clear the Moon becomes more of a rusty orange.
