If you see the North Star go below the horizon, assuming you have identified it correctly, then you would have to be moving south across the equator.

What is the northernmost latitude above which the sun can be above or below the horizon for 24 hours?

You may not realize that you have asked the question in an odd way. When you say northernmost, you are asking for the latitude that is farthest north where the sun can be above the horizon, or below the horizon, for 24 hours. That would be zero degrees north latitude, the north pole. The 'above which' idea may bring us to conclude the answer is any latitude arbitrarily close to but not equal to zero degrees. See what I mean? [Compensate for south as needed] You might have meant to ask for the lowest northern latitude where you can experience the sun above the horizon, or below the horizon, for 24 hours. That would be about 23.439 degrees north latitude.

As an observer on a ship at sea at which latitude does the north star appear closest to the horizon?

I'm assuming that you mean "How far from the NCP is something whose declination is 50 degrees N?" In that case, the best way to visualize it is by looking at a globe of earth. The north pole is at 90 degrees N latitude. Something that's 50 degrees N latitude is therefore 40 degrees BELOW the north pole (the UK fits this description). Likewise, something with a declination of 50 degrees N is 40 degrees away from the NCP.

What do weathermen mean when they use the word visibility?

When weathermen use the term visibility they actually mean how far and well they can see an object that is on the horizon. It can be subject to some variability since it is not defined by a table.

What is the meaning of Twilight?

Twilight is when the sun is below the horizon- either has not yet risen, or has just set. Civil twilight- what most people mean when they say twilight- the sun is no more than 6 degrees below the horizon. There is also nautical twilight, where the sun can be as much as 12 degrees below the horizon. That time is used by sailors to take "sightings" on stars with a sextant for navigation. In Nautical twilight, you can see stars, but there is still a visible horizon to use in your sightings.

What does sunrise mean?

Sunrise is the moment that the leading edge (sometimes called limb) of the sun first breaks above the horizon. Sunset is the moment that the trailing edge (the last of the sun as we observe it) disappears below the horizon.

Can the north start be used to calculate latitude?

I think you mean the 'North Star' ; note the spelling ; NOT 'Start'. It also goes by the name of 'Pole Star' and 'Polaris'. When directly above (90 degrees) you are at the North Pole. When its angle of elevation above the horizon is 89 degrees. you are at latitude of 89 degrees. When you are at latitude 49 degrees (49th parallel), it is 49 degrees above the horizon. When you are at the Equator ( latitude 0 degrees) it is on the horizon. However, you probably cannot see it at this latitude because dust dirt particles in the air. South of the Equator you cannot see it , as it is below the horizon. In the Southern Hemisphere there is no corresponding pole star. Navigators use the constellation named the 'Southern Cross', in order to determine latitude.
