A mare is a female horse over 4 years old, and they can be any colour, height, build, breed and of any temperament. A female horse under the age of 4 is called a filly, and if the mare is a mother it is known as a dam. A male horse is called a stallion, but a gelded (castrated) male horse is called a gelding. If the stallion is a father it becomes a sire, and male horses can also be any colour, height, build, breed and temperament, although stallions are generally more aggressive than geldings, and mares are usually quite moody.
