The Earth has been described as a "big blue marble" from space.

It has also been said to make astronauts realize that there are issues much bigger than the little problems we face daily, and that we are all part of a "bigger picture", if you can excuse the cliche.

It appears white primarily, from the cloud cover. But beneath the clouds there are deep blue, green, and brown colors. From farther than about 1 million miles away, the colors become indistinct and it appears to be a pale pastel blue with some darker areas.

From Mars, some of the land and water features would be visible with a telescope. Earth would be a pale white dot with another grayish dot (the Moon) close by.

What does the atmosphere look like on earth and what does it look like in space?

While you can see the clouds that float in the air, you do not see the atmosphere itself, whether you are on the earth or in space. You look through the atmosphere to see sea and land.

Does light create a shadow in the vacuum of outer space like it does on the earth?

Shadows are caused by something BLOCKING the light. You can have shadows in space, if something is blocking the light. On Earth, shadows often look fuzzy; this is caused by the Sun's light being scattered in the air. In space, there is nothing to scatter the light, so shadows are sharp-edged and clear.

Why are meteorities a possible source of information regarding the orgin and composition of Earth?

Because they were made the same time as the Earth from the same materials. And, since they have basically been frozen in time in outer space, they can tell us a lot about the composition of the Earth. The materials on Earth are constantly being recycled and nothing remains from the birth of the Earth, so that is why we look to outer space and the meteorites that fall to Earth to give us clues to its origin.
