What Happens During Eye Exams?

Eye exams are offered by optometrist offices and retail locations that sell glasses. You can have an eye exam performed in a shop at the mall, or in a clinic at a doctor’s office. No matter where you have eye exams done, there are some basic steps that are always part of the exam. The Famous Chart on the Wall Everyone has seen the eye doctor’s famous chart to test vision. Modern doctors still use this chart as a way to gauge a person’s distance vision. The chart has large letters and numbers at the top and a series of smaller letters and numbers toward the bottom. The eye doctor will ask you to read the smallest line of type that you can. Where that line of type is located on the chart will determine how far you can see accurately. More Technical Equipment There are more updated tests that happen during eye exams as well. After the eye chart test, you will be escorted to a large chair that looks like a dentist’s chair. Once you sit down, the optometrist will lower a large metal mechanism that has a place for each eye. As you gaze through the mechanism, the eye doctor will change the lenses on each eye until he or she finds one that gives you the sharpest vision. That lens setting is then recorded as the strength you need your glasses to be so that you can see well. The mechanism also tests for other eye problems that can be found when one eye is closed off and the other can see. Testing the Curve of Your Eye A test that is sometimes performed is meant to measure the curve of your eye. It is your eye’s curve that allows you to focus properly. If the doctor tests the curve of your eye, it means that you probably need corrective lenses so that you can see well. The amount of curve or the lack of curve gives the doctor an idea of how to treat your sight problems the most effectively. Sometimes this will determine whether or not you can wear contact lenses or glasses for vision correction.

What is Tycho's star?

Tycho's Star is a supernova that was "discovered" by Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe in November of 1572 in the constellation of Cassiopeia. It was visible to the naked eye for 18 months, at its peak brilliance was brighter than the planet Venus and thus visible to the naked eye in broad daylight. This was the first "new star" noticed in the West in modern times. It confirmed Tycho in his suspicion that the heavens were not fixed and eternally unchanging. There seems to be some confusion as to whether the remnant of this supernova explosion -- visible today in a powerful telescope as a sphere of gas glowing at 50 million degrees Fahrenheit -- is indeed identical with Cassopeia A, the most powerful radio object in the sky after objects in our own solar system. Some sources on the net say Cassiopeia A is indeed the remnant of Tycho's Star, others that Cassiopeia A is the remnant of a supernova that exploded in or a little before 1680 and was briefly observed by Astronomer Royal John Flamsteed as a 6th magnitude star which he did not recognize as a "new star." I wish someone would clear up this discrepancy.

What is the difference of amblyopia and strabismus?

Amblyopia is commonly referred to as "lazy eye." It is a vision development disorder, where one eye fails to develop normal visual acuity. Eye patching is a common treatment for this disorder. Strabismus involves both eyes. In this case, the eyes fail to properly align with one another. Surgery and vision therapy are often used to correct this problem.

Can Laser surgery can permanently improve a persons vision?

LASIK is a surgical procedure where the front of the eye is permanently reshaped to focus light properly on the retinal photo-receptors in the back of the eye. It sends sharply focused light to the nerve layer. This information must then be carried by electrical signals to the brain for processing and ultimately vision. If there are problems behind the cornea anywhere in the visual system, then LASIK will not restore vision. For instance in the case of a clouded lens within the eye, or a damaged retina in the back of the eye, the signal will be blocked and no useful vision will result.LASIK replaces the vision from a misshaped eye, but cannot regain vision if contact lenses or glasses will not regain the vision. Some people have very bad vision without their glasses or contacts, and in these cases LASIK can regain the vision that they once had at an early age. This is different from the case described above.
