The great circle representing the apparent annual path of the sun;the plane of the Earth's orbit around the sun;makes an angle of about 23 degrees with the equator. The ecliptic is the imaginary path, as observed from earth, that the sun follows across the backdrop of fixed stars over the course of the year. It can also be thought of as earth's imaginary path if it could be viewed from the sun's perspective. The constellations of the Zodiac are along the ecliptic, and the orbits of the planets are close to it as well. It is called 'ecliptic' because it is also the line along which any solar eclipse will happen.
