Waxing.
From the new moon (where it isn't visible) through to the full moon (when it is visible from earth as a full circle, all night long).
At "New Moon" the moon is between the earth and the sun, so we can only see the dark side (but because it's dark you can't actually see it !). Over the next 2 weeks the moon continues it's orbit around the earth, becoming progressively more and more visible as each day goes by, until we see the "full moon", which is when the moon is on the opposite side of the earth to the sun and is fully illuminated by the sun.
Over the following 2 weeks the visible area of the moon reduces, as the moon completes it's monthly orbit of the earth (actually 29.5 days). This is known as waning.
The moon is said to be waning, when the lighted part gets smaller. When it gets larger, the moon is waxing.
It's usually said that the moon is 'waxing' when it appears to grow in size.
The stage in which the moon appears to grow larger is called the waxing phase. This occurs after the new moon and continues until it reaches the full moon. During this period, the illuminated portion of the moon visible from Earth increases, transitioning from a thin crescent to a half-moon and ultimately to a fully lit moon.

The Moon's shape on Monday would have been a waxing gibbous, which appears as a rounded shape with a larger illuminated portion compared to a first quarter Moon.

It is called Waxing! _________________________ The Moon is always the same size. What we see increasing is the lighted part of the nearside of the Moon. When it is increasing, we call it "waxing"; when we see it decreasing, the word "waning" is used.

The waxing moon phase is when the moon is transitioning from new moon to full moon, and the illuminated portion of the moon is growing larger each night. During this phase, we can see more than half of the moon's lighted side from Earth.
The smaller portion of a solution is called the solute. It is the substance that is dissolved in the solvent, which is the larger portion of the solution. For example, in a saltwater solution, salt acts as the solute while water is the solvent.
A part of the circumference is called an arc. If the circumference is split into two unequal arcs then the larger portion is referred to as the major arc and the lesser portion as the minor arc.
