The side of the moon lights up is the side that faces the sun. This is the same as the earth and the other side that does not face the sun is usually very dark.

The eastern side of the moon gets illuminated first, which is the right side of the moon for an observer in the northern hemisphere and the left side of the moon for an observer in the Southern Hemisphere.

Reach a hand to the crescent moon, grab hold of the hollow. If she sits in the palm of the left, that moon will be fuller tomorrow. If she sits on the palm of the right, that moon is on the wane. - Cowboy Junkies

Which way does a new moon face?

Recognize that the moon waxes and wanes from right to left. Different parts of the moon are illuminated during waxing and waning. In the Northern Hemisphere, the part of the moon that is illuminated will appear to grow from right to left until it’s full, and it will then diminish from right to left. A waxing moon will be illuminated on the right side, and a waning moon will be illuminated on the left side.[7] Hold out your right hand with your thumb out, palm facing the sky. The thumb and forefingers make a curve like a backward C. If the moon fits in this curve, it's a waxing moon (increasing). If you do the same with your left hand and the moon fits in the "C" curve then it is waning (decreasing).

Which side of the moon is illuminated as it waxes from full to new?

A waxing moon has the light on the right side. A waning moon has the light on the left side. Therefore, moving down from a full moon to a new moon, it must be waning, and the light should be on the left.

What right half of moon is illuminated?
