The fact that the Soviet Union had moved ahead of the United States in terms of their Space Program made President Kennedy believe the country had to step up and beat them. National resources to NASA and the space program were immediately allocated.
The space program has given us many things. One of the major inventions is the computer. Without the space program I don't think our computers would be sitting on our desks or in our laps. Corning Ware is another product of the space program, space blankets is also one. Many times things are invented for military use and then it filters down to the general population. A good example is GPS. It is in our cars, but it was made for the military first. The fact we have satellite TV is another space program by product. So, look around you and think of the many things you have that came out of the science for the space program.
NASA was created by Congress and and operates under a Federal Statute (law). A common misconception is that it is a large agency and its operations are performed by NASA employees. In fact, NASA is a relatively small organization, and the bulk of its centers and operations are performed by civilian Aerospace contractors. The debate on "privatizing" NASA is ridiculous, since private companies essentially run the space program anyway. NASA just administers it. The Space Program is only one of NASA's functions; by law, its mandate is to oversee the space program, as well as aeronautics and aerospace research.
The astronaut from the country that has a space program that wants to send a person to the moon's weight will decrease due to the fact that weight is directly related to gravity.
Outer space is, in fact, bottomless, as well as endless.

Clementine was officially called as the Deep Space Program Science Experiment. It obtained multi-spectral images of the whole lunar surface, analyzed the moon's mineralogy and gathered gravity data.
Germany's use of the V2 rocket during WW2 was the inspiration for the Space program. In fact many of the Scientists that worked on the V2 went to work for either Russia or America after the war.
The fact they are not-for-profit makes no difference to the fact that they are still a business and thus have cash flows and funding which needs accounts to be able to track and manage properly and efficiently.
Mainly the fact the the Russians had already put a satellite and a man in space and were planning a mission to the moon. The Americans wanted to beat Russia to it.

Have you tried out the US Space and Rocket Centre at Huntsville, Alabama? The museum there is designed to showcase the hardware of the U.S. space program and the facilities of the United States Space Camp. In fact i have been there as a member of Space Camp India. As a part of the camp we even got to perform hands-on astronaut training. You can check out our pictures at http://spacecampindia.com/index.htm. In fact if you're aged between 9 - 18 even you can enroll yourself for the program. However, I'm not sure whether they have the same programme for adults too. But definitely visit the museum!
