Onomatopoeia is forming a word from the sound produced by the thing associated with the sound. The like below provides many examples. Common examples are oink and woof, and most other words meant to evoke animal sounds. Oink of course brings pigs to mind instantly, and woof is associated with dogs. Onomatopoeia is NOT restricted to animal sounds. Think of words like whoosh plop or zoom.
