Earth is more dense than the moon because the earth has an iron-rich core, where the moon does not. The moon was formed eons ago when Earth was struck by a planetesimal. The result was that some of the Earth's crust and mantle was sent orbiting in space, forming the moon. However, the core of the Earth, the part full of iron, did got get sent into orbit. This explains why the Earth is more dense than the moon.
