LM-4
callsign Snoopy

The lunar module had two parts, the descent stage and the ascent stage. The descent stage, or lower part of the lunar module, contained an engine for landing on the Moon. This stage was a 3.23-meter-tall cruciform structure of aluminum alloy, which, with its four legs extended, had a maximum diameter of 9.45 meters. This stage also contained storage bays for equipment, and a ladder attached to one of the legs to give a crew access to the surface. When leaving the lunar surface, the descent stage would serve as the launch platform for the ascent stage. The ascent stage was basically a cylindrical aluminum structure 4.29 meters in diameter and 3.75 meters tall. During their time on the surface, the crew would live in and operate from this part of the spacecraft. It would also be used to return the crew to orbit and the command service module after surface operations were completed. -from the Lunar and Planet Institute

The Command Module was called Charlie Brown and was designated CM-106. While not included in the official mission logo, due to the use of their names only as callsigns, the Peanuts characters Charlie Brown and Snoopy became semi-official mascots for the mission. Peanuts creator Charles Schwartz also drew some special mission related artwork for NASA.

When was the Apollo lunar invented?

The Apollo Lunar Module was developed in the 1960s as part of the Apollo program by NASA, with the first successful manned landing on the moon occurring on July 20, 1969. The Lunar Module played a crucial role in transporting astronauts from lunar orbit to the moon's surface and back to the command module in orbit.

What were the two missions before Apollo 11?

Apollo 11 was preceded by Apollo 9 which tested the combined Apollo Command/Service Module and the Lunar Module in Earth Orbit, and Apollo 10 which was the Dress Rehearsal for Apollo 11 taking the Lunar Module most of the way to the Moons surface but not landing.

What was the name of NASA's lunar landing craft?

15 lunar modules (LM) were manufactured by Grumman for the Apollo program, the 2nd, 9th, and last 3 were not flown and were either scrapped or put on display. Each LM was given a name for use in radio communications with mission control: * Spider (Apollo 9) * Snoopy (Apollo 10) * Eagle (Apollo 11) * Intrepid (Apollo 12) * Aquarius (Apollo 13) * Antares (Apollo 14) * Falcon (Apollo 15) * Orion (Apollo 16) * Challenger (Apollo 17)

Who was the luner module pilot on the Apollo 12 mission?

Alan L. Bean was the Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 12. He was born on March 15, 1932. He was the backup command pilot for Gemini 10 and on Apollo 9 he was he backup Lunar Module Pilot. Alan L. Bean was the fourth man to walk on the Moon.

What two Apollo missions objective was to orbit the moon without landing?

Apollo 8, the mission that went to the Moon without a Lunar Module to test its capabilities in Lunar orbit. Apollo 10, the mission that took the Lunar Module and had to test the mission abort procedure as the astronauts were flying the first stages of the descent, with no intentions of landing.

What were the name of American spaceships that sent people to the moon?

The launch vehicle for most of the manned Apollo missions was the Saturn V (Apollo 7, which had no Lunar Module, used a Saturn 1B launch vehicle instead). The callsigns of the Lunar Modules in the manned Apollo missions were: * Apollo 7: no Lunar Module (test of Command Module, stayed in Earth orbit) * Apollo 8: no callsign, designation LTA-B (dummy Lunar Module, went around Moon but didn't land) * Apollo 9: Spider (first test of Lunar Module, stayed in Earth orbit) * Apollo 10: Snoopy (full test of Lunar Module, went within 10 miles of lunar surface but didn't land) * Apollo 11: Eagle (first manned landing) * Apollo 12: Intrepid (second manned landing) * Apollo 13: Aquarius (went around Moon but didn't land due to problems) * Apollo 14: Antares (third manned landing) * Apollo 15: Falcon (fourth manned landing) * Apollo 16: Orion (fifth manned landing) * Apollo 17: Challenger (sixth manned landing)

What Apollo missions didn't have to do with the moon?

Apollo 7, Apollo 9, and Apollo 10 did not land on the moon. Apollo 7 was the first crewed mission in the program, testing the spacecraft in Earth orbit. Apollo 9 tested lunar module systems in Earth orbit. Apollo 10 performed a dress rehearsal for the moon landing, orbiting the moon but not landing.

Who were the Apollo 10 astronauts?

The Apollo 10 mission in May 1969 was crewed by Commander Thomas Stafford, Command Module Pilot John Young, and Lunar Module Pilot Eugene Cernan. They performed a dress rehearsal for the Apollo 11 moon landing mission, flying to lunar orbit and getting within 8.4 nautical miles of the lunar surface.

What happened to Apollo 10?

The astronauts for Apollo 10 were Thomas Stafford, John young and eugene Cernan, the Apollo 10 was to go to the moon and then two would be in the lunar module and one astronaut would be in the command module. They separated and docked in the orbit of the moon. This was the final test before Apollo 11.

When did john w.young land on the moon?

John Young piloted Apollo 16 Lunar Module named "Orion" to the lunar surface on the moon on April 21, 1972. Young's Lunar Module Pilot for the mission was Charlie Duke who was the Capsule Communicator at Johnson Space Center the day Apollo 11 became the first astronauts to land on the moon. John Young was the Command Module pilot on the Apollo 10 mission which cleared the way for the Apollo 11 landing 2 months later.
