A small number of meteorites have been shown to be of Lunar (23 finds) or Martian (22) origin.

However, nearly all meteoroids seem to originate from the early stages of the formation of the solar system.

They have been described as part of the "builders' rubble" left after the formation of the planets.

Meteroids are mainly made up of molten metals. A meteroid starts out as a cosmic particle and as it travels through space, it attracts other metals. Since most metals in space are magnetic, each layer attracts a different metal or mineral. Meteroids can have 100's of layers - some are just centimeters thick - while others are up to a meter or more thick. It can take 100's of years to form a big meteoid. Also, there could be a part of a planet that experienced supernova which caused a chunk of it to blast out into the space. Such chunks can be small, the size of a Baseball or as big as a city.
