Arcturus is a supergiant nearing the end of its life. In the very near future - cosmologically speaking - it will become a supernova, brightening brilliantly for a few days or weeks, then fading until it vanishes and we will see it no more. After some years, however, a new dwarf star will form out of its core, but this will only be noticable to astronomers.

Arcturus is a red giant star in the later stages of its life cycle. It formed from the collapse of a molecular cloud, spent most of its life fusing hydrogen into helium in its core, and is now fusing helium into heavier elements. It will eventually shed its outer layers to form a planetary nebula before ending its life as a white dwarf star.
