A waxing moon
The moon as it approaches fullness is called a waxing gibbous. This phase is characterized by the moon being illuminated but not yet fully round. It is a transitional period between the first quarter and full moon phases.
When the moon is more than half full but less than completely full, it is called a "gibbous" moon. Specifically, if it is approaching full, it is referred to as a "waxing gibbous" moon. If it is receding from full, it is called a "waning gibbous" moon. This phase occurs between the first quarter and full moon phases.
When the moon appears to be getting smaller, (approaching nothing - no moon, or "new moon") we say that the moon is "Waning".When the moon appears to be getting larger (approaching the "Full Moon"), we say that the moon is "Waxing".
