Like all stars, the vast majority of the sun's material is Hydrogen gas. Hydrogen is the smallest and lightest of all the elements, just 1 proton and 1 electron. In fact, most or all of the elements that are found in the universe (for example, the iron found on the earth) was created by fusion inside of stars.

Nonetheless, even though new elements are created inside stars, the vast majority of the Sun's material is still hydrogen gas.
