Their main training involved flying and maintaining their spacecraft. They also had to learn the locations of about 50 stars so they could navigate between the earth and the moon. They also had to learn enough geology to describe what they were seeing to scientists back on earth, and to know what rocks they were picking up. They also had to learn to set up their lunar surface experiments and make them work properly. The command module pilot had to learn the names of a lot of craters so he'd know what to photograph. He also had to learn to observe the surface from above, which is very different than surface geology, but no less important.
