Zakah money is traditionally spent on various categories outlined in Islamic teachings, primarily to assist those in need. This includes supporting the poor and needy, aiding those in debt, providing for travelers in distress, and funding community welfare projects. Additionally, it can be used for educational initiatives, healthcare, and other services that promote social welfare and uplift marginalized communities. Overall, zakah serves to redistribute wealth and promote social justice within the community.

Zakah is when Muslims donate money and wealth to charities and good causes. This wealth is not all their life savings or earnings but what money or valuable items (e.g. Jewellery) are left after catering for all your family's needs, for example, money in the bank, or money left n your wallet. Zakah-collectors work out a certain formula using the amount of wealth you have, so not all of it is given away. Muslims do not resent this as they believe that they were only borrowing Allah's items and that they are returning it to him by doing so. It also teaches Muslims to be generous and not selfish. This happens at the end of Ramadam.

Both “Zakah” and “Zakat” refer to the same Islamic obligation of charity. The difference is simply in transliteration from Arabic to English. “Zakah” is closer to the Arabic pronunciation, while “Zakat” is the more commonly used spelling worldwide. At Penny Appeal USA, we use Zakat for consistency, but both terms carry the same meaning—an essential pillar of Islam that requires giving 2.5% of one’s wealth to help those in need. The problem is that money spent on the poor doesn't solve the problem at all.
There are the mandatory zakat which is 2 1/2% of ones yearly savings paid to a masjid or Islamic organization for distribution. Then there is voluntary charity called sadaqat which can be paid to anyone, at any time in any amount. Even a smile of kind deed can be sadat. Then there is zakatul fitr which is the charity given at the end of Ramadan or day of the Eidul Fitr (Feast of Fastbreaking) to purify ones fast and ask that it be accepted. The nisab (amount) is usually $10 per family member. Hope this helps
