The photosphere is the visible surface of the Sun, which appears as granules (the tops of convection cells). The "supergranules" are a pattern into which the granules may be clumped, and can be considered either structurally part of the photosphere or part of the convection zone that lies directly beneath it.

Some sources extend the term "supergranulation" to include both the photosphere and the chromosphere (which does not, however, use convection).
