Valentina Tereshkova (born 1937) was the first woman in space, and flew the Vostok 6 spacecraft for three days in June, 1963. Vostok 6 flew at the same time as Vostok 5, piloted by male cosmonaut Valery Bykovsky, who launched before Tereshkova but landed afterward.

Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to fly in space on June 16, 1963, aboard Vostok 6. She orbited the Earth 48 times during her mission, which lasted almost three days. Tereshkova remains the only woman to have completed a solo space mission.
