New Moon Phase
The moon will be in its first quarter phase a week from tonight after the new moon phase.
The phase of the moon that immediately precedes the new moon is the waning crescent. During this phase, the moon appears as a thin crescent shape, with only a small portion of its surface illuminated by the sun. As it continues to wane, it moves closer to the new moon phase, when it becomes completely dark and is not visible from Earth.
The crescent phase that precedes the new moon phase is called the waxing crescent, where the illuminated portion of the moon is increasing. The crescent phase that follows the new moon phase is called the waning crescent, where the illuminated portion of the moon is decreasing.
The phase of the Moon that comes immediately before the new Moon phase is the waning crescent phase.

Immediately before New Moon.
One is Crescent (waxing), the other is Crescent (waning).
The Waxing Moon phase occurs when we can see the right half of the Moon illuminated from Earth as it moves towards a full moon. This phase follows the New Moon and precedes the Full Moon in the lunar cycle.
The Moon's phase when it's between the Earth and the sun is called a New Moon. It's in this position where at times there is a Solar Eclipse of the Sun. Please refer to the link I have attached.
If you go back far enough, all of them do.The phase immediately before a New Moon is the waning crescent.

The New Moon always occurs very close to the moon's "new moon" phase.
