Telescopes mainly. Some of the high powered telescopes have cameras attached, and these look for dots blacking out portions of the light of the stars we can see. Once we see those dots moving in and out of the lgiht of various stars we know we've found a planet. After the dot is found there's calculations done to determine size and type, possible orbit, etc. These calculations can be done by computer or hand.
