The International Space Station (ISS) was not launched from a specific location. It was assembled in space using modules launched by various space agencies, including NASA, Roscosmos, ESA, JAXA, and CSA.

Skylab was the first space station launched and operated by NASA from 1973 to 1979. The first space station was launched by the Soviet Union in 1971.The core module for the International Space Station was launched in 1998.
The ISS is almost like a puzzle. The first piece of it was launched into space in 1998, and then the second piece launched and connected to the first piece, and we're still launching and connection sections (as of 2009.) The station is expected to be completed in 2011.
The first ISS module launched is the Zarya module of the Russian section of the station. It was launched last 20 November 1998 on a Russian Proton launcher.

Early space stations were launched much like satellites on rockets. The ISS is a modular space station, and was carried piece by piece predominantly by Space Shuttles (USA) and Proton Rockets(Russia). It was assembled in space, which is an astounding achievement considering multiple space agencies built the modules, and they need to fit together perfectly for the crew to survive.
the 1st module was zarya launched from Russia. The 2nd was unity brought up by shuttle Atlantis (i.e. the USA)
