Apollo
The first man to walk in space was the Russian cosmonaut Alexi Leonov.
The US responded to the USSR sending a man to space by increasing funding for their own space program, NASA, and accelerating their efforts to send a man to the moon. This led to the Apollo program and ultimately, the US successfully landing the first humans on the moon in 1969.
The NASA Apollo program, specifically the Apollo 11 mission, put the first man on the moon on July 20, 1969. Astronaut Neil Armstrong was the first person to set foot on the lunar surface, followed by Buzz Aldrin.
The first US man in space was John Glen in Friendship 7. He orbitted the earth in space but never went out into space. But the first man technically considered to be put in space by the US was Alan Shepard aboard the Freedom 7 on a sub-orbital flight. Hope this helps.
The first space program dedicated to putting a man on the moon was Apollo. It was run by NASA and had a series of missions starting in the 1960s with the eventual success of landing astronauts on the moon in 1969 with Apollo 11.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration was the first program to place a man on the moon. Neil Armstrong was the first person on the moon.
There wasn't a probe when man landed on the moon. Instead, he walked on the moon July 1969 with the Apollo space program for NASA.

The purpose of the Mercury program was to send man into space for the first time, orbit around the Earth, find out how a person functioned in space, and to recover the astronaut and spacecraft safely.
The Gemini program wanted to send man and spacecraft into space for two or more weeks. They also wanted to perfect the reentry and landing of the spacecraft. During the Gemini program was also when we had the first space walk.

I imagine every man recruited as an astronaut in the American space program, not to mention the cosmonauts in the Soviet space program. Most likely, many other men (and women) would have loved to play that role, too.
