That depends upon which Epoch. There have been four mass extinctions [over several hundreds of million Years] caused by Earth being over run by Cyano-[Purple]-bacteria; these onslaughts were caused by highly irregular Atmospheric Conditions.

The earth's early atmosphere was made up of 98% carbon dioxide with some water vapour, ammonia and methane.

  • The water vapour condensed to form oceans
  • Plants intook CO2 to produce O2 by photosynthesis
  • Some of the Carbon Dioxide also dissolved in oceans (form insoluable rocks)
  • Denitrifying bacteria produced nitrogen gas
  • Methane and Ammonia reacted with Oxygen in atmosphere
  • Levels of CO2 were slowly rising due to burning of fossil fuels

How did the primitive atmosphere differ from atmosphere today?

As opposed to today's atmosphere, the Earth's early atmosphere would have been quite impossible for human life to thrive in. Today the atmosphere consists primarily of Nitrogen, Oxygen, and Carbon Dioxide, but early Earth's first atmosphere was probably made of Hydrogen and Helium.
