The goal of the first manned space program started by NASA, Project Mercury, was to put an American astronaut into orbit around Earth and to gain experience in space travel. It aimed to test the feasibility of human spaceflight and pave the way for future missions to the Moon and beyond.
The first manned space flight was by the U.s.s,R in the Sputnik.
The second manned space program was the Gemini program, conducted by NASA between 1961 and 1966. Gemini aimed to develop space travel techniques for missions to the Moon and later served as a bridge between the Mercury and Apollo programs.

Previous manned spaceflight missions included the Mercury Program and the Gemini Program.
Gemini
Mercury was the name of the first American Space program started by NASA. The goals were to see if humans can go to space and function normaly.
It was 11 years after the NASA manned programs began in 1958 and 8 years after President Kennedy announced it as a goal. The first successful manned launch did not occur until 1962 in the Mercury program, which was followed by Gemini and then Apollo.
The Right Stuff
The first manned space station was Salyut 1, launched by the Soviet Union in April 1971.
