The Greeks kept that association and by some account, the centaur represented is Chiron, who was a renowned Archer (in other accounts, he is the nearby constellation of Centaurus). The Romans, to avoid confusion, simply called the constellation what it was, an Archer, which in Latin is Sagittarius.
