Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his companions set out to 'achieve' the South Pole, by trekking from Cape Evans. They set off on 11 November 1911 in a caravan to accompany the final team -- which had not been chosen at departure time -- and to establish resupply depots along the way for four explorers.

Even though the sun is up 24/7 now, the temperature and wind combine to force sub-freezing temperatures on all involved. The ponies began to fail, the dogs were not usefully employed, the mechanical equipment failed and so on 4 January 1912, Scott chose four companions to accompany him to the South Pole. The remainder of his team turned back.

On 17 January 1912, Scott and his four companions reached 90 degrees South only to discover that Amundsen and his team had beat them by about five weeks.

On the return journey, Scott lost two of his companions, one to a fall and probable concussion, another to frostbite and valor, then the three remaining explorers died in their tent during the last week of March 1912.

The difficulties included the environment which is extreme, the wear and tear on human bodies of man-hauling sleds on fewer than the required number of calories for this work on a daily basis, and weather, which forced them to remain in their tent a mere 10 miles from One Ton Depot, where they all perished.
