When the Moon is "waxing", it is increasing in visible size. This is between the new moon to the full moon.

When the Moon is "waning" it is decreasing in size, from the full moon to the new moon.

"Waxing" means "growing" ... the period of time during which the visible portion of the

moon's disk is growing as time passes. That's the period of about two weeks, between

New Moon and Full Moon.

We speak of the Moon as "waxing" when the illuminated part of the Moon is increasing toward the full. When the sunlit part is decreasing, we use the word "waning".
