Colin Baker (no relation to Tom Baker) was The Doctor from '84 to '86, then Sylvester McCoy took over as the 7th Doc until 1989, when the series was axed by the BBC. The series was not then revived until 2005, when Welsh TV scriptwriter Russell T.
