Robots, as we understand them today, originated from concepts in ancient history, but the term "robot" was first used in the early 20th century. The word comes from the Czech play "R.U.R." (Rossum's Universal Robots) written by Karel Čapek in 1920, which depicted artificial beings created to serve humans. Early mechanical devices resembling robots appeared during the Industrial Revolution, but modern robotics began to take shape with advancements in electronics and computer technology in the mid-20th century.

The first time 'robot' was mentioned was in R.U.R. (Rossums Universal Robots) a science fiction play by Karel Capek, a Czech writer, in 1921. This is considered the introduction of the word robot, meaning worker. They were closer to what today we would call androids.
Robotics is an engineering category, and as such, robots were never "discovered". Robots were designed and built by engineers who had a specific goal in mind when they did so. In a sense, a steam engine is an example of a simple robotic device, since the position of the piston causes the valve to open and close; however, most machines are much more complex before they are considered to be "robotic". Unfortunately, the modern film industry has romanticized robotics and has caused many uneducated people to imagine that robots are sentient entities. Robots are machines. As such, robots have no feelings. Robots, as all machines, perform their tasks as they were designed.
