Bruce McCandless performed the first untethered spacewalk using a jet pack in 1984. This historic event took place during the STS-41-B mission of the space shuttle Challenger.
The 100th U.S. spacewalk took place on March 2, 2001. This milestone event occurred during the assembly and maintenance of the International Space Station (ISS). Astronauts during this spacewalk included John Phillips and Robert Curbeam, who conducted various tasks to enhance the station's capabilities.
The first American to perform a space walk was Ed White in June 1965. He flew in the Gemini IV mission along with James McDivitt. White began his space walk while the spacecraft was over the Indian Ocean. He continued his walk over the Pacific Ocean. Astronaut White died in the Apollo 1 fire in 1967. This fire occurred during a training session at the launch pad.
The first mission to land on the moon was Apollo 11, which took place on July 20, 1969. American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the lunar surface during this historic mission.
Soviet cosmonaut, Alexi Leonov became the first man to walk in space on March 18, 1965. He was outside the spacecraft for 12 minutes and nine seconds, connected to the craft by a 5.35-meter tether. At the end of the spacewalk, Leonov's spacesuit had inflated in the vacuum of space to the point where he could not re-enter the airlock. He opened a valve to allow some of the suit's pressure to bleed off, and was barely able to get back inside the capsule. After his Vostok 2 mission, Leonov began training for a mission that would send the first cosmonaut around the moon. When the United States successfully sent Apollo 8 around the moon, Leonov's mission was changed to make the Soviet Union's first attempt to land a man on the moon. However, this mission was also scrubbed after repeated mishaps of the proposed launch vehicle. Leonov later commanded Soyuz 19, which docked with the last Apollo mission on July 17, 1975. It was the first joint US/USSR spaceflight.

Sally Ride's job during her historic mission, STS-7 aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger, lasted for approximately six days. The mission took place from June 18 to June 24, 1983, during which she served as a Mission Specialist. Ride was responsible for conducting scientific experiments and was the first American woman to travel into space.
