Eugene Cernan (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugene Cernan)

Cernan was the commander of Apollo 17, the last mission to the moon, and he so far remains the last person to be on the lunar surface after a short ceremony of commemoration. There had been further missions planned, but they were scrapped due to waning interest. The focus moved to the Skylab and space shuttle projects. Further moon missions are being planned.
Captain Gene Cernan was the last man to leave a footprint on the lunar surface.
