The first astronauts to land and walk on the Moon were Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin. Along with command module pilot Michael Collins, they traveled to the Moon on the Apollo 11 mission in July, 1969. They were the first humans to set foot on the lunar surface on July 20, 1969. Armstrong was the first to set foot on the Moon, which he characterized as "...one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind."

Ten other astronauts eventually walked on the Moon between 1969 and 1972.
