Christa McAuliffe was a high school teacher selected to be the first private citizen in space as part of the NASA Teacher in Space Project. She went up in space to inspire and engage students in STEM education and to bring awareness to the importance of space exploration. Tragically, the Challenger space shuttle carrying McAuliffe and six other astronauts exploded shortly after launch in 1986.
Christa McAuliffe signed up to go on the Challenger's mission in 1986 as part of NASA's Teacher in Space Program. She was selected to be the first teacher in space, intending to conduct educational experiments and share her experience with students across the nation. The mission was tragically lost during launch on January 28, 1986.
Barbara Morgan was the backup teacher to Christa McAuliffe for the Teacher in Space Project in 1985. She was selected as the first Educator Astronaut in 1998 and flew on the Space Shuttle Endeavour mission STS-118 in 2007.
Christa Mcauliffe, who did not survive the trip- killed when the Challenger exploded on the way up. She was the first American woman to lose her life in a spacecraft accident- which strictly speaking, did not happen in space- but inside the atmosphere. There were two females also on the Columbia crew- another All-Hands fatal incident, which broke up on re-entry. Mrs. Mcauliffe was a social studies teacher- apart from NASA- not a Biologist which might have been a better choice.
The first teacher in space was to be on the tenth Challenger flight, STS-51-L, and the teacher selected was Christa McAuliffe as part of the 'Teacher in Space' project.Regrettably Christa was killed when the space shuttle Challenger was traveling towards space and exploded 73 seconds after launch. She did not actually reach space. In August 2007, Christa's back-up, made it into space as an 'educator astronaut' (although NASA apparently avoided calling her a 'teacher in space', as she had to give up her role as teacher on becoming an astronaut) on board STS-118, which launched on August 8, 2007.
The spaceship that exploded upon launch in 1986 was the Space Shuttle Challenger. It tragically resulted in the loss of all seven crew members, including Christa McAuliffe, who was set to be the first teacher in space.
No she did not because the plane blowed up.
See: how did the astronauts die in the Challenger disaster.
Christa McAuliffe was a social studies teacher and one of the seven crew members that died in the Challenger accident. She loved it when the first mission took off and wanted to be an astronaut ever since. She finally got the chance when she was selected to go up in space as a teacher out of about 11,000 people who applied for the 'Teacher in Space' program. The Challenger shuttle blew up 73 seconds after take off.
As a Girl Scout, Christa McAuliffe earned badges, participated in community service, sold cookies, went camping and hiking, and whatever else her Girl Scout troop chose to do. Girl Scouts do many things, and it is up to the troop and the adult leaders to choose and arrange the activities. Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts Council has a Christa McAuliffe library of memorabilia and a lodge at their Wabasso Camp named Christa's House. Christa was also a Girl Scout troop leader!
She grew up in Boston Massachusetts. :) Hope this helps!!!

Yes, Christa McAuliffe had a brother named Steven and a sister named Beth. She grew up in Framingham, Massachusetts, where her family supported her education and aspirations. McAuliffe's siblings have often spoken about her legacy and the impact she had on their lives.
Yes, all of the astronauts were found. Christa is buried in the Blossom Hill Cemetery in Concord, New Hampshire.
for you to learn school and then your mark goes up
