Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin returned to the Apollo 11 command module in the "ascent section" of the Eagle (LM-5, lunar lander of Apollo 11). They left the lower part, the landing section, because they didn't need it and it would have required more fuel to return to lunar orbit. Then , once back with Michael Collins aboard the command module, they deliberately crashed the ascent stage back into the Moon. There were two reasons for this: one is to keep "junk" out of lunar orbit, and the other was to provide the first test of lunar geology sensors (Passive Seismic Experiment) left behind on the Moon.
The lunar module that landed on the moon was called Eagle during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969.
