Because there is no air - which would normally create friction and slow the object down. It's the friction of the amtosphere, combined with asteroids speed which causes them to glow as they come close to the Earth.

How fast does an unmanned space probe travel in space?

space is a vacuum, their is no air to slow things down so small forces which are applied over short periods of time can make an object go very fast. like the voyager which passed by planets had had got a boost from planet's gravitational forces. in fact it is said that they travel faster then bullets.

Why does a space shuttle have to travel so fast?

Space shuttles must travel at 11km/s so that they can escape the force of gravity. the force of gravity is approximately 9.81. If you don't travel at a greater speed than the force of gravity, the rocket will not launch.

Why does a space shuttle need to travel so fast when entering earths atmosphere?

Although it reaches incredible speeds, a Space Shuttle is not going fast when it enters the atmosphere. The gravitational pull of Earth, or just gravity, are pulling down on the space shuttle with immense force.

How fast does a space shuttle travel in space in miles per hour?

It has to be going at least 17,500 miles per hour to overcome earth's gravity, so it's at least that much.

How fast do space shuttles travel in space?

They can travel up to 7,743 meters/second or 27,875 kilometers/hour or 25,404 feet/second or 17,321 miles/hour i don't think so this is true because to escape from Earth atmosphere we need 11.2 km/s so above this is little messy
