the moon rotates on its axis once a month (28 days)
The moon revolves around the earth every 28 days
The moon is tidally locked with the earth which means that we always see the same side of the moon. It is true that the moon rotates around the earth but it does not spin on its axis.
We can see only one side of the moon on Earth because, the Moon rotates on its axis just once every time it revolves around the Earth (or once per Lunar Month.)
The same side of the Moon is always facing us.
cause it rotates on its axsis and rotates around the earth
The reason you only see one side of the moon is because you only see side of the moon is facing towards the Earth which means the back of the moon is nonvisible.
The phases of the Moon are caused by the angle between the Moon and the Sun changing. At one time we see the illuminated side, at another time, its dark side. the moon appears to change shapes because you only see the part of it that reflects sunlight THAT YOU CAN SEE. so of the 1/2 of the moon that is illuminated, you only see part of it, the part changing as the moon orbits the earth.
New Moon -All dark, no moon showing Waxing Crescent -1/4 of the right side of the moon is showing First Quarter -1/2 of the right side of the moon is showing Waxing Gibbous -3/4 of the right side of the moon is showing Full -all the the moon is showing Waning Gibbous -3/4 of the left side of the moon is showing Third Quarter -1/2 of the left side of the moon is showing Waning Crescent -1/4 of the left side of the moon is showing
It is what ordinary people (not astronomers) usually call the "half Moon" phase. That describes it pretty well. We see exactly half of the Moon's Earth-facing side lit by the Sun. During first quarter the half that's illuminated is to the West.
The reason you only see one side of the moon is because you only see side of the moon is facing towards the Earth which means the back of the moon is nonvisible.
The only times that you couldn't see the moon from Earth are when: 1. It's orbit makes it currently at the other side of the Earth 2. It's a new moon, so no sunlight reflection is coming off the moon, meaning we can't see it.
The Phases of the moon are caused by the sun shining on one side of the moon- the other side is in shadow. When the moon is beside the earth with the sun shining on half of it, you will see a 1/2 full moon.

The best, most literally accurate answer to that question is: "Because it's dark".Parts of the moon's dark side ranging from 'none of it' to 'all of it' are turned toward us in the course of 29-1/2 days. But we can only see the portion of the moon that the sun shines on ... the "light side". The portion of the dark sidethat's turned toward us doesn't show up at all. That's why we see only part of a disk, and the rest of it is missing.
1. When it is below the horizon. 2. when it is in the Sun's glare 2 days either side of New Moon.
the moon appears to change shapes because you only see the part of it that reflects sunlight THAT YOU CAN SEE. so of the 1/2 of the moon that is illuminated, you only see part of it, the part changing as the moon orbits the earth.
There are many interesting facts about the moon, perhaps not mysteries though. For example, one may find it interesting that the same side of the moon always faces earth. In other words, without the help of satellites, we would have never even seen what the "dark" side of the moon looks like. The dark side of the moon is not actually even dark all the time. It only seems that way to us because we never see it. Sunlight hits the back side of the moon just as often as it hits the side that we see. The reason that we never see that side of the moon is because the moon is in a gravitational lock with the earth. Its orbit is equal to the rotation to the earth. So one earthly rotation (1 day) is the same amount of time that the moon takes to travel around the earth (one lunar year).
There are two reasons: 1. At any given time, one side of the Moon is dark because it's facing away from the Sun. 2. The rotation of the Moon in relation to its orbit around the Earth keeps the same side always facing the Earth. We NEVER see the other side.
At the time of First Quarter and Third Quarter ... when the moon looks like half of a disk in the sky ... you're looking at half of the moon's light side and half of its dark side. Of course, you can't see the half of the dark side that's right there in front of you, because it's dark.
