The atmosphere is actually warmer near the surface because the sun's rays are warming the physical earth, not the air directly. The atmosphere is then heated through convection from the warmed earth. As the warmer air rises, it expands and cools off.

Why does it get colder when climbing up a mountain?

The main reasons are: There is lower air pressure, and there is lower air density. You do technically get closer to the sun, however the distance to the sun is so much greater that it doesn't really have an effect. So just those two reasons!

Why is it colder at the top of the mountain when the top is closer to the sun?

The top of a mountain is closer to the sun than the land around during the day it, but given that the sun is more than 90 million miles away, that difference is negligible. The higher you go up in the atmosphere, the colder it gets. This is because the air at high altitudes is less compressed than the air at low altitudes. When a gas is decompressed, it cools.

Why is it colder on the top of a mountain than the bottom?

Temperatures decrease with altitude due to a decrease in air pressure as you go higher. This causes the air to expand and cool down, hence making it colder at the top of a mountain compared to the base.

How can you bring a Hot balloon lower?

To bring a hot air balloon lower, the pilot can release hot air by pulling a cord that opens the top of the balloon envelope, allowing the heat to escape. This causes the air inside the balloon to cool down, which decreases the overall lift and brings the balloon closer to the ground.

What is the safest order in which to do the phases of exercise?

The safest order for exercise phases is generally warm-up, followed by the main workout, and finishing with a cool down. The warm-up prepares your body for the workout by increasing blood flow and muscle flexibility, reducing the risk of injury. The main workout challenges your body, and the cool down helps your body recover by gradually bringing your heart rate down and stretching your muscles.

Why do your arms and hands get red when you exercise?

Because you are getting hot and the blood in your body moves closer to the surface to cool down.

When should a cool down begin?

A cool down should begin after you exercise, or when you feel dizzy or are getting cramps.

Define a wam-up and cool-down?

Warm up = Get Hot Cool Down = Getting Cold. Pretty frikin obvious

Why is it colder at higher elevations?

At higher elevations, the air pressure decreases, causing the air to expand and cool down. This drop in temperature is why it is colder at higher elevations.

Does a higher specific heat capacity mean that something will cool down faster?

sure :D

What is molecules closer to the surface that are more densely packed than those higher in the atmosphere because of gases pressing down from higher in the atmosphere?

Atmospheric pressure

What does it mean to round off is it to round up or down?

To round of, means to make the number to the closest higher or lower integer. If the number is closer to the lower integer, then you round down. If the number is closer to the higher integer, then you round up. If the differences is equal e.g. 2.5, the you must also round up.

When would atoms move closer together?

Atoms move closer together when attractive forces, such as van der Waals forces or hydrogen bonding, are stronger than the repulsive forces between them. This can occur, for example, when molecules are cooled down or when pressure is applied to a substance.

When does it start getting colder outside?

Well, it starts to cool down in about October. It's not necessarily cold though. Just cool weather mostly. It starts getting cold in about Mid November. Hope I helped :) xoxo

Why do substances contract when they cool?

As substances cool, the molecules slow down and have less kinetic energy, causing them to come closer together. This decrease in distance between molecules results in a contraction of the substance.

What is global melt down?

global meltdown is when the sun is getting closer to earth which causes global heating which then causes global meltdown

Is cool down hyphenated?

The term "cool down" is typically written as two separate words when used as a verb phrase, as in "to cool down." However, when used as a noun or adjective, it can be hyphenated as "cool-down," such as in "a cool-down period."
