The Earth is tilted in relation to the plane of its orbit. This means that the Sun's rays will strike different areas at a different angle, and for a differing length of daytime, depending on the Earth's position in its orbit.

During two separate quarters of the year, one hemisphere will be tilted toward the Sun (either the northern or Southern Hemisphere) and the other tilted away. The hemisphere that is tilted towards the Sun will be warmer, and experience summer. At the same time, the other hemisphere is colder, and said to be in winter. Six months later, the seasons are reversed.

So summer days are warmer and longer, and winter days are colder and shorter. Close to the equator, there is no substantial difference in seasonal sunlight and temperatures.

If there were no tilt, we would have the same average temperatures every day.

There are four different seasons because the earth keeps rotating. It becomes summer when you are at the part of the world that is facing the sun. Winter is when the part of earth you are on is on the opposite side of the sun. Fall is when you are almost to the opposite side, nearly there. Spring is when you are almost fully facing the sun.

during it's orbit of the sun, at times it is closer and furthur away from it, this affects the temperatur (its further away in winter and closer in summer). Also the length of day in certain parts of the world changes with the seasons because of the axis of the earth.

As the earth spins on its axis, producing night and day, it also moves about the sun in an elliptical (elongated circle) orbit that requires about 365 1/4 days to complete. The earth's spin axis is tilted with respect to its orbital plane. This is what causes the seasons. When the earth's axis points towards the sun, it is summer for that hemisphere. When the earth's axis points away, winter can be expected. Since the tilt of the axis is 23 1/2 degrees, the North Pole never points directly at the Sun, but on the summer solstice it points as close as it can, and on the winter solstice as far as it can. Midway between these two times, in spring and autumn, the spin axis of the earth points 90 degrees away from the sun. This means that on this date, day and night have about the same length: 12 hours each, more or less.
