Why earth would have been a barren planet without the atmosphere?

Life as we know it - and especially plants - depends on the air. Not only does it reduce the extremes of heat and cold, it also transports substances which living being need. In the case of plants, it provides them with carbon dioxide. We humans (and animals in general) get our oxygen from the air.
