actually its not its the other way around. mars was named after ares the god of war.

in greek mythology all the major key gods were deemed to have a planet in there honor (planets where biggest most powerful thing in the sky/heaven at that time.

when the Romans came in they kept alot of the same beliefs but renamed the gods to fit their beliefs so ares became mars and posedion became neptune, zues became Jupiter, etc, etc.

as for why mars that is simply because it is red. the color of blood and war.
