Best Answer

Mercury is hot because it is the closest planet to the Sun, and has no virtually no atmosphere to circulate the heat to the night side (which gets incredibly cold).

Mercury is NOT the warmest planet. Venus is!

Mercury is the closest planet to the sun so the day side reaches extremely high temperatures, while the night side stays cold. The average temperature of those is less than Venus. Mercury has no atmosphere so it cannot keep the heat it receives. Venus has very thick clouds and an atmosphere that is 97% (or more) carbon dioxide. Scientists consider Venus as a runaway greenhouse planet. It traps almost all of the heat it receives which makes it much warmer than Mercury.

Mercury average: 354 degrees F

Venus average: 847 degrees F
