The moon's brightness comes from its ability to reflect sunlight. When the moon goes through phases, it is because the Earth is blocking some of the sunlight and casting its shadow on the moon.

Because the Moon is smaller than the sun and the sun shines and the rays of sunlight reflects from the moon

Ok that first answer doesnt make any sense. So I will add good info. Light from the sun reflects and refracts when it travels through our atmosphere. And even though direct sunlight to the Moon is blocked by the Earth, the refracted light travels around the Earth and still shines on the moon. It is filtered light and that's why the Moon appears reddish.

During part of the lunar eclipse, part of the Moon is still in sunlight. The reason the Moon can still be seen in the totality phase, i.e., when the entire moon is in Earth's shadow, is due to sunlight refracted in Earth's atmosphere. This light, of course, is much dimmer than direct sunlight. Also, it makes the Moon look very red.

The moon is visible at night because it reflects sunlight. When the sun sets, the moon rises and the sunlight reflects off its surface, making it visible in the night sky.

Because the sun's rays are so powerful, it goes around the sun and shines on the moon.
