Mainly because human creatures live for such a short time, compared to the amount of time
it takes to get to anywhere in space.

A simple example: Say we want to send a crew of people to the nearest star. Since it's
so far away, they need to be able to travel as fast as possible.

The Apollo missions needed 3 days to get to the moon. Let's say we develop some kind of
propulsion system that can take a space ship to the moon in one minute. At that speed, how long
would it take to get to the nearest star ?

47 years !

Astronauts who get close enough to anything outside the solar system to study it can never
live long enough to return. And scientists who send a robot craft close enough to anything outside
the solar system to study it and report back can never live long enough to hear the report.
