NASA plans an expedition in the next 20 years the problem now is logistics basic services food, water, oxygen, spare space craft parts make this a hard trip to plan and if something goes wrong the astronauts are in big trouble, rescue would not be an option, so the plan has to be precise with contingencies built in.

Mars and Earth have a lot of similarities but in spite of that, the environment on Mars will not be comfortable. Mars does not has much gravity as it is very small in size. Due to this, the atmosphere of Mars has floated away. Therefore, it doesn't has any Ozone layer. Hence, there is no protection against the harmful ultraviolet rays which is not safe. In addition, it has very little pressure. Considering all of the above, life on Mars may be possible but it will be very different from the life we know! No one can predict the future but though possible with huge investment it is highly unlikely in the next 20 - 30 years. Though we may make a manned visit. That too would take a huge investment and more political will then there is at present.

There are too many variables to overcome first, so never.

First, the extreme radiation from the sun which our own magnetic field shields us from will kill everything living on Mars due to it's own non-existant magnetic field. We would have to create a planet size magnetic field.

Then we would have to protect ourselves from other objects which our atmosphere protects us from.

Then there is food and water supplies.

Yes. We hope to colonize other planets within 500 years. It's not completely certain though--that's just an estimate/goal.
