Traditionally Alison (Allison) was Norman French diminutive of Aalis (a Medieval variant of Alice.) This name was common in England and France in the Middle Ages, and was later revived in the 20th century.

However, Allison is also a somewhat common surname (in this case it's a patronymic meaning "Allen's son" or "Ellis' son." Since, in some families it's traditional to give their sons the mother's maiden name as a first or middle name... for that reason, it's not unusual to find males with the name as well.
