There are a number of Saints called Giles but perhaps the most famous of them gave his name to numerous hospitals and hostels throughout England. He was born in the 7th Century and died in the early 8th Century and at this time it is quite probable that no formal canonisation process was in use. It happened that a person was acclaimed by local people and accepted by the local bishop. The first person who was certainly canonised was Saint Udalric of Augburg in 993, there may have been others before that and if Saint Giles was beatified or canonised formally by a Pope that information is now lost.
