My Answer 6: 6 people leave on day 1. 4 return after the second day. The 4 give 2 days worth of supplies to survivor 1, and 2 days worth of supplies to survivor 2, who have again 5 days worth of supplies. That leaves the 4 each with 2 days of supplies to return to camp. The 2 continue on a 3rd day and after the 3rd day, survivor 2 gives survivor 1 a day of supplies. This provides 8 days of supplies total to survivor 1. 5+2+1. It is the end of the 3rd day and survivor 1 has 5 days of supplies left to finish the trip. Survivor 2 now has 3 days of travel to return to the camp, and 5-1 day personal use - 1 day donated supplies leaves him/her with 3 days of supplies, allowing the return. ====================================== Alternate Answer: still 6 Another option is to have 4 people leave on day 1. 2 people give 1 day each of supplies to survivor 1 and return with 2 remaining days of rations, after the 2nd day. Also, after the second day, 2 more people leave from camp with full rations. After the 3rd day, survivor 2 gives 1 day of rations to survivor 1, fulfilling survivor 1's need for 8 day's rations, and returns to camp. He/She runs out of rations but returns to the location he/she reached from day 2 earlier. The 2 people who left 2 days after meet up with survivor 2 on that 4th day, and they provide 1 ration each to the returning survivor. They each have 2 days of rations now, and return to camp.
