First, a match is a competition between two wrestlers of nearly the same weight...a meet is a series of matches in several weight classes. Typically it varies by school, but most are within a few dollars of each other. In Southern Illinois, a meet will pay about $60, a quad about $95, a tournament around $130 at the Varsity level. JV is about ten percent less. Youth Wrestling (13 and under) have tournaments nearly every weekend starting in early December. The pay for these events varies, but is typically in the $150 range. To get a license it will cost about $45 to get the rule and case books and take the exam. You will be required to attend rule interpretation meetings (currently online) and a clinic each year on the mechanics of positioning and making calls. You should join a reputable local officials organization which could be another $30-40 and NASO which is the national association that will be about $90 more. Uniforms and equipment will be about $80 for a starter kit that includes your pants, shirt, socks, whistle, lanyard, arm bands, leg bands, and a flip disk. You will still need to get shoes - $40 or more. Youth wrestling usually requires membership in another organization (USWOA for our area) for another $35. They will do background checks so be sure you are not a creep. Be prepared...this is not a sport to officiate if you are among the tentative people. You will make mistakes and should expect to hear about it.
